ACCESS & PERMITS:

As members of the Mountain Club, we enjoy access to some amazing mountains, forests and coastal areas throughout the country and abroad. In South Africa, access is normally provided by the Club Sections through land purchases, servitudes of access, or by arrangement with State Departments and private land owners. Some Sections own mountain huts and all members of the MCSA may have the use of these through reciprocity arrangements.
While the South Cape Section is very new and does not own mountainous land at this stage, it does have access arrangements with many private land owners and official bodies. Thus, we are able to climb or hike in the Tsitsikamma, Kouga, Outeniqua, Kammanassie, Swartberg and other mountain ranges and forests, as well as the full length of our beautiful coast line.

Although access to is often on private land all of the main mountain ranges in the South Cape are in state hands. They are managed as wilderness or nature reserves by either the Western Cape Department of Nature Conservation or by officials of the Garden Route National Park. Over the years a good working relationship has been built up between members of the club as users of mountain land and of the rangers who are its custodians. At all times proper advance arrangements are made before any exploration of the mountains and the appropriate access fees are paid.

The Eastern Province Section welcomes our members to their properties on Cockscomb and Witterivier and the Formosa hut in the Tsitsikamma. For access to these areas, a Permit must be obtained in advance.
The Committee member responsible for Access & Permits, maintains a database of access details of all areas where we have standing arrangements with the owners and also holds the permit book and keys to the Eastern Province Section properties. Go to the Contacts page for details.

In addition to the above, we have a special arrangement with the owners of the land on which the Wolwekrans rock climbing crag is situated. For the current arrangement please contact the Rock Climbing convenor. Go to the Contacts page for details.
