WELCOME!!

WELCOME to the South Cape Section of the MCSA !!!

The South Cape Section of the Mountain Club of South Africa welcomes you to our website.

If you are a first time visitor, we hope you take time to browse through all our pages and find out all about us and our passion for the mountains. If you are not already a member we would like to invite you to join us.

History of the MCSA:

The Mountain Club of South Africa ( MCSA ) was founded in Cape Town in 1891 and is thus one of the oldest mountain clubs in the world. Since then the club has grown enormously in size and now comprises 14 Sections throughout South Africa. These Sections are administratively autonomous in their regions but bound by a Central Committee which decides on national policy. The MCSA is affiliated to the Union Internationale des Associations D'Albanisme (UIAA ).

The South Cape Section is the youngest of the 14 sections. It all started in 1999 when a small group of "die hard" mountaineers who retired in the Garden Route, joined forces to explore the mountains of the area seldom visited by other Sections. They were soon joined by other retired mountaineers in the area as well as new members who shared their love for the mountains and the great outdoors. The group grew sufficiently large by July 2005 to warrant application to the Central Committee to form a New Section. This was approved and the South Cape group was awarded full Section status in September 2005.

Our objectives:

The main objective of the Mountain Club may be summed up as:   To practice, encourage and further the interests of mountaineering

The MCSA offers mountaineering, climbing and hiking opportunities to its members. It provides access to mountainous areas and is involved in mountain rescue, training and conservation activities. These in turn promote fellowship among people with the same interests. A specific objective of the South Cape Section is to access, conserve and enjoy our local mountain ranges by fostering relationships with local controlling bodies and private land owners.

Disclaimer: Mountaineering, rock climbing and other forms of outdoor activities are potentially dangerous with a risk of personal injury or even death. Such activities are undertaken by our members, their guests and any visitors at their own risk. The South Cape Section accepts no responsibility for any loss, injury or damage to a person or property arising through the participation in club activities. It is recommended that you become familiar with any potential risk and be prepared to assume full responsibility before participating in any activity provided by the club.
